Heys turn their attention to the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday as they welcome Bootle to Adie Moran Park in an Extra Preliminary Round tie.
They will enter the game in good spirits following Tuesday night’s 3-0 home win over Pilkington. After the huge disappointment of the poor performance against Burscough on the opening day of the season Heys hit the straps as they produced a vastly improved display to take the points.
Lee O’Brien and James Hampson will now be looking for their side to push on and build on that result as we enter a busy period of League games alongside the start of the FA Vase and today’s opening round of the FA Cup. They will also be looking to see how the team measures up against a side who play one level higher.
For our visitors, this is the first game of the season as the Northern Premier League does not start until next weekend.
Bootle compete in Division One West where they came mid-table last season, finishing thirteenth. There were briefly fears of relegation and they changed Manager in March with the eye-catching appointment of Dave McNabb.
He was in charge of Warrington Rylands when they won promotion from the North West Counties League and he then steered them to the Northern Premier League Division One West title at the first attempt, also, for good measure, winning the FA Vase along the way.
McNabb, who was in the dugout when Rylands won 3-0 here at Adie Moran Park in the FA Cup in 2021, has overseen a busy summer of recruitment. Pre-season results have been mixed with a 4-3 loss at Litherland REMYCA at one end of the spectrum whilst at the other end there was a 6-0 victory over Northwich Victoria.
Heys and Bootle have only ever met twice, both times in the Cheshire League during the 1978-79 season with Heys winning 1-0 at Grimshaws before losing the return on Merseyside 4-0.
If the scores are level after 90 minutes the replay will be next Tuesday night (7.45pm)
The winners of the tie receive £1,125 and the losers £375.
The winners will be away to either City of Liverpool or Penistone Church in the Preliminary Round on 19th August.
