Heys head to Charnock Richard on Saturday for their penultimate away League fixture of the season (3pm).
It may seem strange in mid-March but there is only one week remaining of the League season for Matt Barnes’ side who on their maiden season in the NW Counties Premier Division have achieved their goal of preserving that status.
Doing so has been an exhausting task, the game will be Heys 46th of the season which works out at approximately a game every five days. In recent weeks there have been signs of that starting to tell with injuries taking their toll. It has contributed to a run of only one win in the last twelve games, which have yielded eight points.
However, with the Macron Cup to start next month and with three games to play there is still something to aim for. A healthy mid table finish can still be attained and Heys will want to go into their cup tie at Bury AFC in good spirits.
The trip to Charnock represents a stiff challenge. Charnock are one of the form teams of the division, with only Champions Macclesfield ahead of them on that front. Just one defeat in the last 13 League games, ten of which have been won, have catapulted the Lancashire side up the table and they are firmly in the hunt for the runners up spot which would give them a crack at promotion to the Northern Premier League either, automatically though points per game or more likely through the play offs.
Although having lost to injury, the League’s top scorer in Jordan Darr, Charnock have pressed on with club legend Carl Grimshaw, picking up the tab since returning from Northwich, with ten goals in ten games.
That creates a sub text to the game, with Darr injured, Heys Jack Coop is in the hunt for finishing the League’s top scorer being just one behind Darr on 31 goals. Grimshaw is five further back on 26.
There will be much at stake when the teams run out at Mossie Park.
