Heys lose but safety is assured

Heys lose but safety is assured

STEPHEN HOWARD19 Apr - 19:35

The Great Escape is complete.

Heys suffered a 1-0 defeat at Longridge Town today in their final match of the season, but are now officially safe from relegation, despite Colne winning.

At a blustery Longridge, Heys were left cursing home 'keeper Kier Barry, who produced a fantastic performance with at least half a dozen stunning saves, one double save from Connor Martin in the first half defied belief.

Although Heys controlled the game for long periods, the home side themselves were not without threat, hitting the woodwork in the first half, and they took all three points with a 61st minute strike by Liam Atkinson.

With Colne securing a 2-1 win at home to Abbey Hey, it mean't they were locked on 36 points with Heys in the Final table. However, Heys superior goal difference of eleven goals was sufficient to ensure they remain in the NW Counties Premier Division.

At the turn of the year Heys were bottom, eight points behind Colne and ten behind Squires Gate. It has been some achievement by Ryan Hutchinson, his coaching team, players and everyone involved behind the scenes to turn that around and complete the Great Escape.

Full match report to follow.
